Birdhouses aren't just for the birds: fundraiser offers housing for people

Birdhouses don’t just house birds — the ones being auctioned off Friday at the Latah Recovery Center will also help house people.

Twelve wooden birdhouses, each decorated with a variety of media by local artists, are part of a silent auction from 4 to 10 p.m. to benefit Sojourners’ Alliance. Gift baskets and gift certificates will also be auctioned.

The transitional housing provider was notified in May of the loss of a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development effective in June, said Nancy Carvajal, an organization volunteer and coordinator of the fundraising event. The fundraiser is among the efforts to provide short-term assistance to the organization, which helps to provide shelter along with rent and utility assistance to individuals in crisis.
