“The Blades Carry Me: Inside the Helicopter War in Vietnam,” is a personal account of the Vietnam War from two different views. While James V. Weatherill tells of his experience as an Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam from November 1967 to 1968, his wife, Anne, tells her story as a pregnant college student and military spouse during the controversial war. The former Clarkston residents will give a free presentation and sign their book at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History, 415 Main St.
The book promotes awareness of the contributions of Chinook helicopter crews to the Vietnam War and aviation history. It also recognizes the challenges of military families supporting their service members from afar.
The Weatherills lived in Clarkston from 1980 until 1994 when they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where they now reside. While living in Clarkston, James Weatherill worked as a pilot for Cascade Airways. Before that he flew for Columbia Helicopters logging on the North Fork of the Clearwater River. Anne Weatherill served as executive director of the Nez Perce County Historical Society from 1980 to 1984. She also worked as a writer and proof-reader for the Asotin County American and wrote for special publications for the Lewiston Morning Tribune.
The historical society will receive a portion of the proceeds from books sold during the event. The signed book sells for $18, including tax.
