“Tough Enough: Twenty-five years in Hells Canyon,” by Virginia Woods Meyer

“Tough Enough” tells the story of Lem and Doris Wilson, who ventured into the remote Oregon territory of Hells Canyon in 1951 with their family, establishing a 6,000 head sheep ranch. Twenty-five years later they were forced off the land when the U.S. Forest Service employed the law of eminent domain to take privately owned agricultural ground for recreational use. Using Doris Wilson’s memoir “Life in Hells Canyon” and other accounts, former Grangeville resident Virginia Woods Meyer uses creative nonfiction to describe what life was like for a family living in Hells Canyon after World War II. The book is available online through Amazon in either paperback or e-book form.
