The young adult novel Hannas Courage: A Story of Love and Betrayal at the Battle of Gettysburg follows the harrowing journey of a 15-year-old girl at the turning-point battle of the Civil War in July 1863.
The book is written by Elyse Cregar, district elementary librarian in the Moscow School District. Cregar spent several years as a licensed battlefield guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Penn., and the book has been verified for historical accuracy by a Gettysburg Battlefield historian.
When Hanna finds herself attracted to a handsome Rebel guarding her home conflicts erupt with her mother, who is hiding in the attic caring for a wounded Union soldier. As the battle escalates Hanna realizes her toddler brother can only be saved if she flees.
For teachers and students of American history, Hannas Courage includes a free study guide in the book as well as on the website, www.tameracpub.com.
