Asotin County master gardener Kathy Nelson will demonstrate the proper way to maintain garden tools, kicking off the Washington State University Master Gardener program’s annual Brown Bag Garden Series from noon to 1  p.m. Thursday (May 22) at Beachview Park, 1015 Second St., Clarkston.

Nelson will have a variety of tools on hand to view and will share her method of sharpening tools.

The weekly series is held on Thursdays at the park’s Lions Gazebo. Attendees should bring their own lunch.

Kendrick’s annual Locust Blossom Festival, with the theme “Way Back When,” kicks off a summer of regional community celebrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at venues throughout the town.

Events include a 7:30 a.m. color run starting at Kendrick High School; 10 a.m. parade on Main Street; barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire hall, 600 Main St.; egg toss at 1 p.m. along Main Street and live music from 11 a.m. to about 3 p.m.

Enterprise, Ore.-based folk and Americana singer-songwriter Janis Carper performs from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at One World Cafe, 533 S. Main St., Moscow.

Local musician Allison Anders will open the show.

Carper is known for weaving her personal stories into her music, drawing inspiration from her rural upbringing and life experiences.

Connoisseurs and novices alike can expand their knowledge and palates at a Deep Dive into Specialty Coffee from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Rite Coffee Roastery, 1320 S. Mountain View Drive, Moscow.

Participants will explore the flavors and aromas of specialty coffee in a small group setting during the hands-on event, learning about different coffee beans, brewing methods and the art of cupping. Seating is limited to six participants.

Aspiring gardeners can get hands-on instruction during a presentation titled “Grow Your Own Microgreens” from 3-4 p.m. next Thursday at Genesee Community Library, 140 E. Walnut Ave.

Local expert Jeff Williams will focus on equipment, setup and techniques for successful cultivation.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase their own growing equipment to get started right away.
