Learn to Skate: Wheat Whackers Junior Roller Derby

The Wheat Whackers junior roller derby is offering open-enrollment and introductory class for kids between the ages of 6 and 17.
Interested but don’t know how to skate?
“That’s the perfect time to come,” said Autumn Swanson, junior roller derby coach.
All kids need for this free event is a mouthguard and a signed waiver. The Wheat Whackers will provide loaner skates, helmet, knee pads and wrist guards and get kids out on the floor skating. Youths will have the chance to learn and practice basic skills as well as watch experienced junior roller derby skaters do their thing.
The introductory class will be offered on the first Sunday of every month this year, said Swanson. Those who choose to join junior roller derby will need to pay a $30 per month fee and attend practices two to three times a week, with bouts held throughout the year. Although kids with all levels of experience are invited to join junior roller derby, they must be 7½ years old and be able to skate safely and properly in order to participate in bouts. Those who don’t yet meet those qualifications can practice and participate in other events while they build their skills.
Learn to Knit

Good materials make a difference when it comes to successfully learning to knit, according to the Yarn Underground, which is why all materials are included for the two-session beginning knitting class there.
The class is offered on a regular basis and teaches newbies the basics -- not only how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off, but what type of yarn and needles are ideal for early success. Starting everyone on the same page ensures everyone has learned something valuable by the time they leave, said Shelley Stone, owner.
The Yarn Underground offers classes for all levels of experience. A Beginning Crochet class will be held 10:30 a.m. to noon, Feb. 10 and 24. Cost is $30. For more experienced knitters, a sweater design class will be 10:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 17, Mar. 3 and 24 and covers design and color selection. Cost is $45.

Brooks lives in Chewelah and has written more than 20 books in a wide range of genres, including the Mr. Pish educational children’s book series and Agent Night suspense series.
