After singing for "American Idol," self-taught musician Shania Rales is aiming to appear on "America's Got Talent"
Hometown: Lewiston
Genres: A little bit of everything — country, Elvis, pop — just not rap or heavy metal
The sound: Raw and honest
Bio: Rales, 19, taught herself to play guitar when she was 10, the year her mother died.
“When I was a little kid, my mom knew I could sing, and after she passed away I just started doing it because I knew that’s what she wanted me to do.”
The 2012 Orofino High School graduate won the Kooskia Old Opera House Theatre American Idol contest in 2012, receiving a trip to audition for TV’s “American Idol” in Oklahoma City in 2012. She says she won a golden ticket to the second round, but because of a miscommunication she missed her performance date. Undeterred, she auditioned for “America’s Got Talent” last December and is awaiting the results.
Unusual fact: “I still can’t read music. It’s like forensic science to me. I just do everything by ear.”
Gig: 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, The Blue Lantern Coffee House & Wine Bar, 326 Main St., Lewiston. Free admission.
