MAC MILLER HEADLINES SPRINGFEST CONCERT
Some critics have called his music “frat rap,” but Mac Miller’s nearly 4 million followers on Twitter prove he’s tapped into a vein of success.
Rapping phenom Malcolm (Mac Miller) McCormick will headline Washington State University’s Springfest 2013 concert Saturday night with E-40 opening the show.
Born in 1992, Mac taught himself to play piano, drums, guitar and bass by the age of 6. After learning to compose songs in a variety of musical genres, he began studying the art of rhyme, heavily influenced by artists like Big L, Lauryn Hill, Outkast, and A Tribe Called Quest. He soon developed a reputation for delivering jaw-dropping freestyles on the freestyle/cipher/battle circuit of his blue-collar hometown of Pittsburgh.
A month after graduating from high school in 2010, he signed with the independent Rostrum Records and his infectious, light-hearted debut mixtape “K.I.D.S.” became a breakout Internet hit.
At age 19, his debut full-length album, “Blue Slide Park,” topped the Billboard albums chart at No. 1. Many critics link his popularity to his social media savvy. Today he has nearly 4 million followers on Twitter and about the same number of likes on Facebook. Last fall was the debut of his MTV2 reality series, “Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family,” which is documenting the release of the now 21-year-old’s sophomore album, “Watching Movies With the Sound Off,” out this spring.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday at Beasley Coliseum. The concert starts at 8. Admission is $27 for WSU students and $42 for the general public. Tickets are available at ticketswest.com, (800) 325-SEAT.
