A recently released scene from the upcoming movie “Ready Player One” shows main character Wade Watts in his virtual reality gear. The movie is based on the novel by Ernest Cline.

In the sci-fi novel “Ready Player One,” it’s 2044 and people live two lives, one as a human struggling to survive on a ruined Earth and the other as a virtual citizen addicted to an online fantasy world called the OASIS that offers more opportunity, adventure and equality than real life. Steven Spielberg is turning the bestselling debut by author Ernest Cline into a movie set to open March 30, so you can expect to hear a lot more about it in the coming year. It’s a good time to read the book and prepare for the discussions to come because there’s a lot to talk about here -- such as the future of humanity as we shift to online schooling, gaming, dating and owning virtual property.

The novel’s protagonist is teen Wade Watts who, like the rest of Earth’s population, dreams of winning the ultimate video game, a contest built into the OASIS by its 1980s-obsessed creator. If he wins, he’ll inherit OASIS and the multi-billionaire’s fortune. Geeky pop culture ’80s references make it easy to see why Spielberg was drawn to this project; but more than that, the book imagines a future that could provide an epic film experience. Of course, you should always read the book first in case he misses the mark.
