In a weekly column called “Diary From Iraq” Megan Field shared her experiences as an American service member in Iraq during the height of the 2007 troop surge.
The column ran in the Pullman native’s hometown newspaper, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. Along with sharing her day-to-day life and feelings while deployed as a Navy officer with the U.S. Army, she wrote about interesting people and situations she encountered on the base.
“The Iraq deployment column I wrote for the Daily News played such an important role in getting me started in my post-military career as a writer,” said Field, who now lives in San Diego with her husband and two children and recently released her debut novel, “Lessons in Gravity,” under the pen name Megan Westfield (293 pages, Entangled).
Set in Yosemite National Park, a daredevil rock climber named Josh Knox is preparing to climb the treacherous peak Sorcerer Spire with a
documentary film crew recording his every move. April Stephens, a young intern with the crew, must interview Knox, a task that proves difficult because of his abrasive personality. As they get to know each other she questions loving someone who risks his life for a living.
Field said the book falls under the “new adult” genre, which explores the volatile, exciting phase of life after high school. She is at work on her next novel, about a young female mountaineering guide on Mount Everest, expected to be released later this summer.
