"Reading the Market with Murakami Haruki in 1980s Japan"

Uploaded by jeffkm
In this Asia on the Palouse Speakers Series talk, Professor Brian Hurley (University of Texas) examines the “miraculous” age of affluence in postwar Japan through a literary lens. Focusing on the early writings of novelist Murakami Haruki in particular, it explores how the literary imagination of Japan’s flush 1980s made the economics of market life into an object of aesthetic representation and critique. The talk will be in-person in the Clearwater Room in the Idaho Student Union Building at 10:30 a.m. and is co-sponsored by the Idaho Asia Institute and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.
