Suicide prevention expert will speak Wednesday

Steve Button, a retired social worker and Suicide Prevention of the Inland Northwest board member, will talk about the 988 Crisis and Suicide Prevention Lifeline at noon Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the 1912 Center Arts Workshop, 412 E. Third St., Moscow.

The presentation, part of the League of Women Voters of Moscow speakers series, will cover ways the suicide hotline, which was implemented in July last year, can be utilized, including what callers can expect.

Button also will speak generally about how suicide is affecting the north central Idaho region and how to assist someone who might be contemplating suicide, according to a League news release.

Button retired in 2018 after 29 years as a social worker in the Lewiston School District. He served as a hospice volunteer for 20 years and is a founder of the Willow Center for Grieving Children, where he has volunteered for 25 years.

He has been involved with nonprofits promoting suicide prevention in the region since 2003, including currently serving on the SPIN board.
