Robin Harvey of Lewiston is one of the artists opening her studio for a tour celebrating 50 years of the Valley Art Center in Clarkston.

An artist’s studio is often a sacred place stocked with the tools of creation and objects of inspiration.

Saturday, seven Lewiston-Clarkston Valley artists will open their studios to the public during a day-long tour.

“People can spend the day traveling from one place to another, meet the artists and hopefully get inspired,” said Robin Harvey, an artist with a studio on the tour and one of the event’s organizers.

The tour will benefit the Valley Art Center, which is celebrating its 50th year this month. The group has been around a few years longer than that but that’s when it obtained its nonprofit status, Harvey said. From its downtown Clarkston gallery and workshop space, the group offers regular classes and exhibits, including visits by renowned teachers. Their mission is to promote and create a passion for the arts.

People can purchase tickets for the tour through the center. The tickets list the studio addresses with a map. They also note if a studio has refreshments, restrooms or if it is handicap accessible or has stairs. People can visit the studios in any order they please from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artists on the tour work in a variety of media including oil, pastel, ink, jewelry, ceramic tile, textiles, scratchboard and engraving. Their studio spaces range from family living rooms to a converted barbershop. Some will be selling their work. Many also have work for sale at the center. While the front of the center is devoted to invitational shows, the back is available for members to rent to display and sell their pieces.

Upcoming exhibits and classes can be found online at lcvalleyartcenter.org.
