A popular seasonal attraction, the Clearwater Corn Maze, will not be taking place this fall in Lewiston.
Adverse growing conditions left the corn too weak to stand up to recent storms, according to a news release from the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
The nonprofit maze operated the last three years in a field adjacent to the Lewiston Roundup Grounds. It is a partnership between the college, which organizes students to operate the maze; Kaufman Farms of Lewiston; and the Lewiston Roundup Grounds.
“We’re disappointed because we know the maze is a popular community event. Our students enjoy providing a great experience for families and young people. Our students also gain valuable experience. Unfortunately, this year that experience includes the risk that goes along with agriculture,” Larry Makus, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences associate dean for academics, said in the release.
The maze has been planned, planted and grown a total of five years. The first season’s maze did not open because a record setting cold spell in mid-September destroyed the corn. In the years it has opened it’s drawn up to 12,000 visitors a season. This year’s maze was to feature the bucking horse logo of the Lewiston Roundup.
