“It’s pretty much just a celebration, a get-together for everyone to enjoy,” says Effie Hernandez, the association’s president, a Shoshone-Bannock from the Fort Hall, Idaho, area. While area tribes such as the Nez Perce and Coeur d’Alenes are represented, other tribes that participate vary, Hernandez says. It’s a way to experience a blend of nations and get up close to musicians and dancers.
This year’s head staff will include the band Iron Horse as the host drum. Hal Eagletail of Alberta, Canada, will serve as master of ceremonies; Keith Heavyrunner of Lapwai is the arena director; and Janice Ellenwood of Lapwai is the head judge. The Nez Perce Color Guard will present the flags.
Grand Entry times are at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Special events include an appreciation dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday and an Easter Egg Hunt at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Arts and crafts vendors will sell jewelry and other items throughout the weekend.
Dancers will compete in a variety of categories, including Women’s Fancy Dance and Men’s Fancy Dance. The event also will feature a pay and match hand drum contest.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the UI Native American Student Association Center and next year’s pow wow.
