MOSCOW — Leonard Pitts Jr., a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist, will be keynote speaker of the sixth annual Oppenheimer Ethics Symposium Feb. 18 at the University of Idaho here.
The free talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the International Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitnman Center on campus. Pitts’ speech will focus on media coverage of racial issues in the context of this year’s presidential election, according to a news release.
Pitts was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004 for his work as a newspaper columnist at the Miami Herald. His syndicated column is published regularly by the Lewiston Tribune.

LEWISTON — The 26th annual Literacy Council Trivia Bee Competition, featuring a “Star Wars” theme, will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Williams Conference Center at Lewis-Clark State College here.
The event also will feature baked potato and dessert bars, a no-host beer and wine bar, silent auction, book sale, audience participation, costume contest and door prize. Dinner and auction begin at 6 p.m. with the trivia competition to follow at 7.

Feb. 20
LEWISTON — The fifth annual Wine, Whiskers & Wags, a fundraiser to benefit the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, will begin at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Lewiston Elks.
The event, for those 21 and older only, features a variety of food provided by restaurants from the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley as well as wines from the region. Live and silent auctions, live music by Larry Dahlberg (the Singing Mailman) and dancing will round out the evening.
Cost is $45 each, and all money raised will go to benefit the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter in Lewiston. Advance tickets may be purchased at Century 21 Price Right, 920 Main St., Lewiston, or may be ordered online at the shelter’s website, www.lcshelter.org.

Feb. 20
SPALDING — Members of two organizations will give a presentation on the firearms used on the Lewis and Clark expedition at 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Nez Perce National Historical Park visitor center here.
The free program is given by members of the Idaho chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and the Hog Heaven Muzzleloaders. They will exhibit flintlock arms of the type used on the expedition as well as trade guns acquired by the Nez Perce.
The visitor center is 12 miles east of Lewiston at 39063 U.S. Highway 95 .
Feb. 20
MOSCOW — A community contra dance will be held Feb. 20 at the 1912 Center here, 412 E. Third St.
Free dance lessons begin at 7:30 p.m. and the dance will be from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Caller for the dance is Morna Leonard and the band is Northern Shores.
First-time dancers will be admitted for $5. Cost is $6 for Palouse Folklore Society members and $8 regular price.
Feb. 20
CLARKSTON — The Clarkston High School Dance Team Show, featuring dancers from five organizations, will begin at noon Feb. 20 in the CHS gym here.
In addition to performances by the CHS Dance Team, students from Just For Kix, Shirley’s Dance Studio, Amie’s Dance Academy and All City Drill Team also will dance.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. at the gym, 401 Chestnut St. Money raised will help pay for costumes and competition entrance fees for the dance team.
Cost is $5 for adults, $2 for students and free for children ages 4 and younger.
Feb. 21
MOSCOW — This year’s Oscar-Nominated Short Films will be screened Feb. 21 at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre here, 508 S. Main St.
The nominated animated short films will begin at 5 p.m. and the nominated live action shorts will begin at 7 p.m.
Cost is $6 for one screening or $10 for both.

MOSCOW — Dirty Revival of Portland, a seven-piece soul group, will play beginning at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at John’s Alley here, 114 E. Sixth St.
Members are Sarah Clarke (vocals), Evan “evv’n’flo” Simko (M.C., guitar), Terry Drysdale (drums), Karl Ludwigsen (keyboards), Jon Shaw (bass), Jon Clay (trumpet) and Chris Hardin (tenor sax).
This tour is in support of their self-titled, debut album, released in September.
