Give a hoot: Call in an owl at Winter Wanderings family series

That's what the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute is hoping will happen at their Owl Moon event, says Cait McHugh, education coordinator. Owl Moon is the first in the Winter Wanderings Family Series the organization is planning this year.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will begin with a reading of the classic tale, "Owl Moon." The picture book is a favorite of McHugh's that tells the story of a child who goes out into the night woods with her father to do owl calls in hopes of seeing one of the birds. After the story, attendees will emulate that experience with a half-hour walk on the Nature Center's trails.

"The idea is to get owls to respond or fly in," McHugh says.

Either way, though, everyone will get a chance to see an owl. After returning indoors from the walk, the Washington State University Raptor Club will provide the opportunity to see live owls up close.

"The idea with this event is to get families within the community outside even in the winter months," McHugh says. "It's a very different world than in the warmer months and definitely worth exploring."

The event is also a way to expose families to the outdoor resources at the organization, including trails, a pond, wetlands and a pump track with bicycles available for use. These are available to the community and can be used at any time, McHugh says, though during business hours there are people around to point visitors in the right direction.
