“Mists of the Miskatonic” and “Hellgate, Montana” by Al Halsey
In “Mists of the Miskatonic,” Lewiston’s Al Halsey presents an anthology of creepy tales inspired by the legendary horror writer, H.P. Lovecraft.
Halsey’s stories visit the past, present and future, taking the reader to small towns, the outer reaches of space and time, and in Lovecraftian fashion, the edge of madness. Released in January, the 192-page, self-published book is Halsey’s first. He also has a short story included in the anthology “Zombies Galore,” edited by T. M. McLean.
Halsey is a lifelong resident of Lewiston and graduate of Lewis-Clark State College. He has worked at Northwest Children’s Home for more than 25 years. He will sign copies of the books from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at Hastings in Lewiston and from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Hastings in Moscow.
Halsey's new novel, the paranormal western “Hellgate, Montana,” was released by Permuted Press and is available online only as an e-book. The story follows Jeremiah Brandt, who is headed for the most supernaturally infected place on the frontier, Montana’s Hellgate Valley. Brandt is a Retributer, a bounty hunter in search of monsters for the Roman Catholic Church. Retributers are men “pure of soul, with no regrets and no designs on a long life,” writes Halsey. Brandt finds the ominous powers of darkness he seeks in Missoula, but he also begins to think of the town as more than just a place to collect bounties.
