The bestselling book “I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban” has been selected as the 2016-17 common reading for first-year and other students at Washington State University in Pullman.

The 2013 memoir by Malala Yousafzai and British journalist Christina Lamb is a first-person account of Yousafzai’s life in northern Pakistan and how, after the Taliban took control of the area, the girl spoke out about her right to an education. In 2012, when she was 15, she was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school. She recovered from the assassination attempt to become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and an international advocate for education and freedom.

The common reading program features special events and speakers related to the selected book. Often the author of the book is invited to speak at WSU. The 2016-17 speakers have yet to be announced.
