The Black Cypress in Pullman advanced one step closer to a coveted James Beard Award last week, when the James Beard Foundation announced nominees.

The “outstanding hospitality” category was narrowed from 20 semifinalists to five nominees, with The Black Cypress joining restaurants from Alabama, South Carolina, Maine and Illinois.

The restaurant and bar in downtown Pullman is in the running for the award that recognizes an establishment for demonstrating “consistent excellence in food, atmosphere, hospitality, and operations while contributing positively to its broader community,” according to jamesbeard.org.

“It’s been delightful to be recognized for the passion we have put into our craft,” service manager Grace Navarrete said in an email. “We are immensely grateful to be recognized for the effort we put in and want to extend our gratitude to our community, past team members that laid this foundation and loyal guests, who made this achievement possible.”
