Lucca, Italy

Robert Woods
Looking northwest, this is a view of the Italian city of Lucca in Tuscany on August 24. The photo was taken by Bob Woods of Moscow from the Torre Guinigi Tower in the old portion of the city, which is completely surrounded by a wall that served to defend the city from attack hundreds of years ago. On the top of the wall is a paved path that is used for walking and biking. The modern portion of the city outside the wall has a population of around 80,000. The mountains in the far distance are an important source of marble.
