Dusty Bly displays Scorpio-themed makeup applied by Jacey Johnson.

I’ve been looking forward to doing the Scorpio makeup look, largely because even people who aren’t into astrology are likely to know that Scorpios, Oct. 23-Nov. 21, are special.

Scorpios are known for their assertive and passionate nature. They are honest and aren’t afraid of expressing their emotions when they know what is truly right.

Meet Dusty Bly, of Lewiston. Dusty is a fellow small-business owner, who operates 5R Photography in Lewiston. When she isn’t busy taking photos, you can find her coaching flag football and traveling with her family. When she finds free time, she also likes to read and hang out with her friends.

Scorpio is the sign associated with sexuality and the desire for deep connections. I used this as my inspiration and gave Dusty a “saucy” smoky eye. For this look, I used the Sultry palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills, a set of lashes and a berry-toned NYX Smooth Whip matte liquid lipstick paired with a matching lip liner.

Supplies for this eye/lip look:

1. An eyeshadow primer or concealer.

2. A neutral-toned eyeshadow palette. A four-pan palette would work great.

3. Your favorite pair of lashes.

4. Black eyeliner pencil.

5. A bold lip color with matching lip liner.

6. A blending brush, angled brush and flat brush.

To create the look:

1. Prep the eyelid with concealer, using a flat brush. Apply the concealer all the way to the brow bone.

2. Using a fluffy blending brush, apply a taupe to the crease and blend upward toward the brow.

3. Take the darkest color of your eyeshadow palette (preferably black) to create a shadow wing. Use an angled brush to create the perfect wing.

4. With the fluffy brush, use a dark brown and begin to blend from the shadow wing inward toward the middle of the lid. This will create that smoked-out look. If you can’t see the wing anymore you have blended too much, and you can fix this by going back over the wing with the black eyeshadow and angled brush.

5. With a shimmery highlight, or lightest shade in your palette, use the flat brush to press the pigment from the inner corner of the eye to the dark brown. You can diffuse any harsh lines where the light and dark connect with the blending brush.

6. Apply mascara and the strip lashes.

7. Apply eyeliner pencil along the waterline.

8. Blend out the black waterline with a black eyeshadow and flat brush. You’ll have more control with the color using the flat brush under your eye. Using a blending brush might result in too much color.

Lip tip

I personally prefer to use lip liners that need to be sharpened, because I think the color lasts longer and they’re better at preventing bleeding. Use the lip liner to outline the lips, bringing it in almost to the middle of your lips to give you a solid base for your dark colors. Then apply your liquid lip on top.
