Plenty of time remaining to learn & create this summer

If you’re looking to add some cold refreshment and new skills to your summer play, local classes and workshops might be the place to look.

Upcoming learning opportunities include:

Homemade Root Beer and Ginger Ale When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18 Cost: $15 Summertime and root beer go hand-in-hand, and now you can make some to put in yours. Paulette Brusseau will provide a brief history of ginger ale and root beer and demonstrate “the easy way” to make these beverages using club soda rather than the traditional (and lengthy) fermentation process. Students will get inside tips on selecting and peeling ginger as well as learn how to vary their recipes using extracts, oils and sugar-free sweeteners.

“This root beer is excellent, and anyone could make it — 9 to 90,” Brusseau said.

Still, students younger than 13 must have a registered adult with them. The class meets on the Lewis-Clark State College campus and students are asked to bring two 1 liter bottles of club soda. Class registration is available at www.lcsc.edu/ce or by calling (208) 792-2447; registration deadline is when the class reaches capacity.

Young Sewists When: 2 to 3:30 p.m. July 18 Cost: $25

Aspiring sewists, ages 10 to 17, will get an introduction to both hand and machine sewing and walk away with a small pouch for carrying pencils, sunglasses or electronic devices.

Chelsey Lewallen, class instructor, said the hour-and-a-half session is mostly focused on covering stitching basics and allowing kids to be creative. Sewing is a lost art, she said, but once learned it’s one that has lifelong value.

“I think we really underestimate how capable kids and young adults really are,” Lewallen said.

To register for this or other sewing classes, contact Altered Ego at (208) 596-4017. Altered Ego is located at 208 S. Main St., No. 11, in Moscow.

Children’s Summer Art Workshops When: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to next Thursday (watercolor), 1 to 2:30 p.m. July 28-30 (beginning drawing and sculpting), 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11-13 (watercolor) Cost: $35

Kids have the chance to learn watercolor, drawing and sculpting basics from local professional artists during the annual workshops offered by Valley Art Center. Students will complete at least one project in the course of the workshop and watch their artistic skills improve.

The class is open to kids in grades second through sixth. Register by calling Valley Art Center at (509) 758-8331; all materials are included in the class fee.

Interested in additional arts opportunities for kids? The Kids’ Summer Creativity Series at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn offers classes from 1 to 3:45 p.m. on Thursdays from next Thursday to Aug. 20. More information is available on the online calendar at www.inland360.com.
