Renaissance Fair bench dedication

Renaissance Fair royalty (Leeanne Noble and Tom Preston), along with members of the Moscow Peace Band, dedicated this bench in Moscow's East City Park in honor of Gretchen Stewart and the late Dean Stewart. The ceremony took place May 6 at the opening of the 50th Renaissance Fair. The bench's plaque reads: "Lovers of poetry, music, trees and peace -- lighting a path to a better world."

Two Moscow churches are teaming up to offer free food to Moscow-area children this summer. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse provide Weekend Food for Kids to supplement the Moscow School District’s summertime free weekday lunch program. Each bag contains two days’ worth of kid-friendly meals and snacks, as well as fresh fruit and beverages. Distribution is every Friday at 11 a.m. outside Lena Whitmore Elementary School on Blaine Street in Moscow. Volunteers on a recent Friday were (from left): Carol Espe, Nancy Lyle, Harriet Hughes, Margaret Dibble, Jo Ellen Force, Debbie McLaughlin, Peggy Jenkins and Kat Clancy.

Jim "Mudcat" Grant, the first African-American pitcher in the American League to win 20 games, visited Moscow this spring. Here, he is pictured with Jessica Blain, a University of Idaho journalism student, at Moscow's 1912 Center, after a panel discussion about Race and Religion in American Sports. Grant pitched in the major leagues from 1958 to 1971. The program was sponsored by the UI School of Journalism and Mass Media, the Latah County Historical Society and the Idaho Humanities Council. Rodney Frey, professor emeritus of ethnography at the University of Idaho, received the Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities award from the Idaho Humanities Council Aug. 1 in Moscow. The award recognizes a high achievement that fosters greater understanding of the humanities. It was presented by Shelley McEuen Howard, of Twin Falls, chair of the IHC board of directors. Frey teaches and writes about storytelling and traditional cultures of Native American communities in the Northwest.
