The Sound of summer

Lewiston’s weekly free concert series celebrates its 10th year

Seven new bands join the lineup for this summer’s Sound Downtown, which celebrates 10 years of bringing live music to Lewiston’s Brackenbury Square, starting Friday, June 2.

“We’re just really excited to kind of expand on the folks that we bring in,” Beautiful Downtown Lewiston Executive Director Brenda Morgan said. The free concerts, organized by the downtown development nonprofit, are at 6 p.m. every Friday in June and July, except June 30.

This week’s event includes live music at a second location, with performances starting at 4:30 p.m. on New Sixth Street next to Bumper Crop Coffee. Lewiston Civic Theatre actors will give a sneak peek of the coming production of “Grease” there at 5:30.

Headliner Shania Rales, well-known to music lovers in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, will play from 6-9 p.m on the main stage at Brackenbury Square, off D Street.

“She is the perfect kickoff to our 10-year celebration,” Morgan said of Rales. “The entire lineup is going to be incredible.”

Lewiston-based Size-Mo Professional Sound, which is running sound and lights for this season, also helped recruit the new artists, Morgan said, resulting in a solid mix of local and regional bands.

“We really just want to elevate Sound Downtown in general,” she said.

New features include signature cards to be distributed at each concert that artists can sign for audience members, an idea Morgan had after watching children track down performers after concerts. And a local organization, Ethan & Friends, will provide a sensory-friendly space where kids can play during most performances.
