Thelypody in a Kiln

On the LCSC Geology Trip to Hells Canyon this spring, we saw this huge plant with spikes of purple flowers growing right in its own vase, an historic lime kiln. Thick-leaved thelypody is its long-winded name, and its flowers can be purple or white. Photo by Sarah Walker, May 5, Hells Canyon near Limekiln Point.

These small wild foxes are found only on the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast, where intensive restoration efforts have resulted in the foxes' status of "Endangered" being removed in 2016.
