PULLMAN — It takes a community of people to grow a city’s art, music and culture scenes. With that in mind Spokane native Marshall Peterson set out to photograph and interview the people shaping Spokane.
His exhibition, “S50, Spokane Movers & Shakers,” showcased on re-purposed sandwich boards, took his work out of the gallery and into the streets to the people.
Peterson is now traveling around the Northwest with the exhibit in hopes of inspiring other communities to recognize their movers and shakers. A smaller version, “S10: The First Wave,” featuring the first 10 subjects of the exhibit, is on display through Saturday, Aug. 31, outside Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters, 400 E. Main St., in Pullman.
“People just think that change happens. I don’t think that,” says Peterson, 48, a former teacher and musician who spent the last decade living in Mexico.
The people who make things happen aren’t usually the ones holding the microphone, he says. They are behind-the-scenes. In a way the exhibit gives back to them, he says. “It can be challenging making the world a better place.”
The exhibit is up during business hours at the coffee shop.
