Image: The bright red fruit of this western mountain ash announce the coming of fall and will soon be fed on by migratory birds. The shrub occurs widely in forests of the mountainous west, including Moscow Mountain where I found this one recently.

Image: This fellow showed up this morning, browsing on the apricot tree 15 feet from the sliding glass door to my deck. I spread to drape just enough to take the photo, unbeknown to him. Comes spring I will have a little less pruning to do!

Image: This fellow claimed my Moscow premises as his territory during the current mating season. Here he is outside the kitchen window this morning. My camera's focusing light caused this reaction.

Image: This plant, in early fall color, was found on the shoreline of the Snake river, west of Almota. Its palmate, deeply lobed leaves appear to be those of a bigleaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, native to west coast areas. It is used extensively as an ornamental and it likely developed from seed carried by river from Lewiston or vicinity. Many other exotic plants occur along the river in this area, brought there that way. Photo by Malcolm Furniss, September 30.

Image: A green lacewing (Chrysopa species) laid these eggs on the underside of my apricot tree among a colony of aphid nymphs. The eggs are suspended by slender stalks, thought to protect them from predation. They will hatch into mobile larvae that will feed on the aphids, which were especially abundant this year, favored by a wet spring. Photo taken in Moscow on July 8 by Mal Furniss.

Image: This handsome daylily caught my notice as it poked out of the shadows in my backyard. The ever-moving sun soon left it less eye catching among the surrounding plants. Photographed by Mal Furniss in Moscow on July 9.

Image: The colorful leaves of this oak brightened my Moscow property last September. There are no native oaks in Idaho but many have been planted in communities for shade and for their attractiveness. Photo by Malcolm Furniss.
