In “Grouse Along the Ridge Roads,” Boise hunter Craig Kulchak takes readers along on his adventures hunting for wild forest grouse in the high mountain passes of Idaho.
Accompanied by his Ryman and Old Hemlock English setters, Anneca, Beth, Briar, Bramble and Tweed, the trips aren’t about the numbers of birds taken, said Kulchak.

“Grouse Along the Ridge Roads” is Kulchak’s fourth self-published book on upland bird hunting. It focuses on the terrains of southwestern and central idaho - Boise National Forest, Payette National Forest and the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Each chapter is a new grouse hunt and includes illustrations from Kulchak’s journals and poems that tie into each story. It’s written for experienced hunters and people unfamiliar with bird hunting, he said.
“The underlying theme is the relationship between the dog and owner and the wild things they chase,” said Kulchak. “You’re not always successful when you go out but it doesn’t matter.
It’s the experience you have. It’s all about the dog work.” Kulchak works as a consulting project manager for commercial and residential real estate developments. He’s a board member of the Idaho Chukar Foundation whose writing has appeared in Wing and Shot, The Pointing Dog Journal, The Grouse Point Almanac and other magazines. He’s been hunting birds since 1969.
