People, organizations and places that have contributed to historic preservation in Idaho will be recognized Saturday at the 42nd annual Orchids & Onions Awards at the 1912 Center in Moscow.
The awards are sponsored by the Boise-based nonprofit Preservation Idaho. Orchid Awards recognize positive contributions. Onion Awards focus on projects or programs insensitive to historic preservation. According to the organization’s website, they’ve been given to individuals or corporations who demolish historically significant buildings or sites, or new construction that is insensitive or ignorant of the neighborhood’s history.
Following the ceremony, there will be a presentation by Idaho Smart Growth covering its Moscow-based Grow Smart award recipients. The event includes a reception and tours of the center. Drinks and light appetizers will be provided.
Area individuals, groups and projects that will be recognized are:
- Nels and Joyce Reese will be recognized for Heritage Stewardship of the Cornwall Mansion in Moscow for their work preserving the historic home through proper craftsmanship and design.
- Barbara Coyner, cited as a “steadfast advocate for preservation throughout Latah County,” will be recognized as a Friend of Preservation. Coyner serves on the Latah County Historic Preservation Commission and authors its annual publication.
- An Archipedia of Idaho’s Classical Buildings created by the Society of Architectural Historians will be awarded a Cultural Heritage Preservation Award “for creating an accessible and comprehensive website of Idaho’s architectural history.”
- The Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway History Preservation Group is cited for Excellence in Historic Preservation for accurate and careful restoration of the Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway Depot in Potlatch.
- The 800 and 808 Main Street Project in Lewiston will be honored for the midcentury-style renovation of historic Newberry Square, contributing to Main Street revitalization.
- Work on the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall in downtown Lewiston to restore the original façade of the building, displaying the original storefront and window settings, will be recognized.
- The renovation of Spalding Hall on the Lewis-Clark State College campus in Lewiston will be recognized for the “excellent maintenance of the historic building and the diligence in ensuring that the building does not fall into disrepair.”
