A special family folk dance, sponsored by the Palouse Folklore Society, begins at 5 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Old Blaine Schoolhouse south of Moscow.
The free dance is aimed at families and will include easy circle, line, contra and folk dances to live music and taught by Tim Daulton of Moscow.
A covered-dish meal begins at 6:30 p.m., and attendees also can stay for the regular monthly community contra dance to follow.
Gary Miller will be the caller for the contra dance with music by Potatohead. Free dance lessons begin at 7:30 p.m., with the dance from 8 to 10:30 p.m.
Cost is $8 regular price, $5 for first-timers and $6 for PFS members.
The schoolhouse is at the corner of Eid and Blaine roads, eight miles south of Moscow. A map and directions may be found at palousefolk.org.
Aug. 19
The Harmonia String Trio will play a free concert at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 outdoors on the grounds of the Cordelia Lutheran Church.
The trio is composed of teachers in the University of Idaho’s String Academy in Moscow.
The church is at 1501 Danielson Road, Genesee, about eight miles southeast of Moscow.
Aug. 19
Put your busy life on “paws” Sunday — and don’t fur-get your sunscreen — when you head to the annual Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter Dog Swim from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Asotin County Family Aquatic Center in Clarkston.
Happy dogs of all breeds will make a splashdown in the pool, with proceeds to benefit the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter in Lewiston.
Humans get in free, but dogs have to pay $5 each. (Bones are not accepted as legal tender.)
Organizers require dogs in heat or aggressive dogs to sit this one out.
The aquatic center is at 1603 Dustan Loop.
Aug. 19
If a cool, dark theater sounds good on a hot day, a screening of the 1996 film “Fly Away Home” will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 in the visitor center auditorium at the Nez Perce National Historical Park’s visitor center at Spalding.
The free screening is one in a series of the park’s “Year of the Bird” events, as 2018 marks the centennial anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
The PG-rated film stars Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin as a father and daughter who attempt to lead a flock of orphaned Canada geese south by air.
The visitor center is 12 miles east of Lewiston at 39063 U.S. Highway 95.
Aug. 21
Tony Osborne of Spokane will give a free presentation about the importance of dialogue between humans during a “Wine and Wisdom” event at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Basalt Cellars in Clarkston.
Osborne’s talk, “The High Road: Fighting Selfishness through Dialogue,” will focus on how patterns of selfishness when talking with others leaves little room to consider other perspectives, according to a news release.
A former newspaper reporter, Osborne later taught for nine years at the American University in Bulgaria. Since 2002, he has been a professor of communication studies at Gonzaga University in Spokane. His recent book is “Greed is Good and Other Fables: Office Life in Popular Culture.”
Wine will be available for purchase at the venue, 906 Port Drive.
Aug. 22
Igor and the Red Elvises will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at John’s Alley in Moscow.
The rock ’n’ roll band is led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Igor Yuzov, who was born in Germany and raised in the former Soviet Union. His band started in 1995, and tours almost constantly, still finding time to release 11 studio albums, according to the band’s social media.
Cost is $7, and the venue is at 114 E. Sixth St.
