Image: This image of a Peninsular Desert Bighorn Sheep was taken on February 22nd at 11 am while hiking the Andreas Trail at the Palm Springs Indian Canyon Trail. This was part of a family reunion in Palm Springs and we had all 10 of us on the hike.

Image: The Elegant Cat's Ear is a special flower that is often missed as it is low to the ground but it is wonderful to see once it is found. It gets its name from the hairs on its petals but the deep purple also intrigues me. It has a single leaf that if one doesn't look closely is hard to associate with the flower. This example was found at a Palouse Land Trust Conservation Easement called Judy's Trail on the outskirts of Troy, Idaho. It was taken by Dave Ostrom on June 14th.

Image: This Mountain Lady Slipper was photographed at Idler's Rest Nature Preserve on June 14th on the left side of the Universal Access trail. I find it to be the Queen of the Wildflowers and feel that no other flower equals it's beauty. It is elusive as it usually doesn't bloom in the same place every year.

Image: I took this photo on May 24th at Idler's Rest Nature Preserve. It is a Striped Coralroot and as it has no Chlorophyll in its leaves it derives its nourishment from fungi. The plant goes dormant for several years after blooming so one can go back the next year to the same spot to see it again.

Image: This image of a Western Trillium was captured at Idler's Rest Nature Preserve on April 15th, 2024. I love the beauty of the Trillium with 3 leaves, 3 sepals, and 3 petals and always look forward to seeing them bloom. There are many wildflowers in bloom at Idler's Rest and on the Penstemon Path which starts at Idler's Rest goes up Moscow Mountain.

Image: While hiking a Paradise Ridge on Friday, March 15th, I found this special Sagebrush Buttercup which is shown in a closeup and magnified view. The flower has ten petals rather than the five that I am used to seeing. Through a search of the web I found that this is possible but rarely seen.

Image: I found Grass Widows just beginning to bloom on Paradise Ridge the morning of March 15th. This was a nice surprise as I haven't seen them so early before.

Image: I hiked up Paradise Ridge on the morning of March 15th and found many Sagebrush Buttercups in bloom. To me blooming Buttercups are a sure sign of spring.

Image: Palouse Land Trust had a great day with volunteers spreading gravel on the Penstemon Path hiking/biking trail on Moscow Mountain. Shown is the great view with volunteers working on spreading gravel to tame the mud on the trail. This was taken on the morning of December 22nd.

Image: These were the first Buttercups on Kamiak Butte that I've seen this year. They are always a sure sign of spring. Photographed by Dave Ostrom on the ridge of Kamiak Butte on March 18, 2021.

Image: The Tundra Swans are making a brief visit to Lake Chatcolet this week, while on their way north. This was taken on March 11th, 2021 by Dave Ostrom. The swans are feeding in the mostly empty lake bed and the pair in this image were displaying.
