Grab a brew and be prepared to learn something new.
That’s the mantra for Pullman’s Science Pub, taking place 7–9 p.m. Thursday at Paradise Creek Brewery.
Similar gatherings have been held in cities like Seattle and Portland, but this is the first of many expected for the small town of Pullman.
The quarterly event allows those with a curious thirst for learning about science to come and get answers from experts in an informal setting.
Washington State University doctoral student Zachary Frederick will be one of the leaders of Thursday’s discussion. The topic: fungi.
“I’ll be talking about how mushrooms grow, the different types of fungi and how to grow culinary mushrooms,” Frederick said.
Frederick said he first became involved with the event after volunteering at the Palouse Discovery Science Center. Science Pub is the extension of a program it offers that helps children learn about science.
Frederick said his side of the discussion will focus on the understanding human history and how the things around us are affected by humans.
“I’m really looking forward to the exchange of information,” Frederick said. “A true sign of success would be to have the information spread among the audience.”
Science Pub will also feature guest speaker and plant pathologist Dr. Frank Dugan from WSU’s Agricultural Research Service.
