The high-energy southern California rock band Joyous Wolf fuses together influences from heavy metal to Delta blues. The four year old band signed a major label record deal earlier this year with Atlantic’s Roadrunner Records.
Vocalist Nick Reese, guitarist Blake Allard, bassist Greg Braccio, and drummer Robert Sodaro play at 3rd Wheel Friday. Reese gave Inland 360 a look into his musical mindset before the show.
What band or artist changed your view of music?
Reese: That's really tough to say. There have been so many artists that have changed how I see music. I will say though, that when I learned of Elvis Presley my life changed forever. I'm talking young E, when the man was in his prime. He had it all. Through him I would find every other musical revelation I've had in my life. Elvis showed me the blues, showed me rock ‘n’ roll, which put me on the path to find all the other types of music I love, from funk to heavy metal.
What artist are you really into right now?
Reese: I'm really into the post punk/new wave/birth of alternative era of music. It has become my personal favorite. So many amazing groups from 1978 to 1984 -- Joy Division, Talking Heads, REM, Tears For Fears, the Police, the Smith's, A Flock of Seagulls, that type of stuff. Lyrics mean a lot to me and the bands of that era had a lot to say. It definitely scratches my itch.
What song, any song, could you live without?
Reese: Anything by Imagine Dragons.
What musical act, dead or alive, would you love to see in concert?
Reese: James Brown in Olympia 1971 with Clyde Stubbfield, Jaybo Starks, Fred Wesley, Bootsy and Catfish Collins. I would pee myself then die after the show ended.
