For 20 years, Arlene Falcon has been Moscow’s tie-dye maven.
As the owner of Tye Dye Everything she’s tie-dyed, well, everything, from lab coats to doggy T-shirts. She’s known for her vibrant, swirling colors, and she thinks it’s this combination of color and inventiveness that landed her work in the Fall Fashion issue of British Vogue.
“I figure they chose me because I have everything,” said Falcon, who sells her work at her shop in downtown Moscow, online and at the Valley Collective in Lewiston.
Tie-dye is trending on runways around the world, and a pair of overalls from Tye Dye Everything was featured in a full page photo in the issue. The garment also was featured on the magazine’s Instagram feed, which has led to interest from some famous people.
“Back in April, I got an email from Vogue, U.K., asking me for samples of our clothing for a photo shoot they were doing in mid-May,” said Falcon. “They wanted 50 different things. It was right between selling at Art Under the Elms and the Renaissance Fair, and I ignored them.”
A follow-up email soon arrived with a shortened list of 25 items. Falcon boxed them up, sent them off and forgot about it. She was told the items were a loan and would be returned, and if they weren’t they would be paid for.
“Several months later, I get an email from the singer Lorde and her people, and they requested some overalls like they saw in the Vogue Instagram post,” Falcon said. That was how she learned her clothing, specifically a pair of tie-dyed overalls with what she calls a rainbow crinkle pattern, were on display to the world. She mailed two pairs to Lorde because she wasn’t sure about sizing.
Falcon’s daughter, who lives and works as an architect in the U.K., sent a copy of British Vogue to her mother so she was able to see it herself and share it with friends.
As for Lorde, her people emailed Friday to pay for both pairs of pants, Falcon said. They told her they were going to Justin Bieber and Karlie Kloss. Kloss is an American model engaged to Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of White House senior adviser Jared Kushner.
“That’s when I was like, what?!” Falcon exclaimed. “It feels like my 15 minutes of fame, and I don’t know about the fortune part.”
