Pandemic Playlist: Sing your way through our ‘situation’ with some songs that suit the moment

By Kaylee Brewster

Whether you’re in self-isolation, feeling panicked or homeschooling your kids, there’s a song for you during the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Music is a powerful tool to change your mood and help release stress. Besides, what else are you going to do?

The Who, was of course, a natural choice; not only does the band share the same name as the World Health Organization (WHO) but, with school out and older people staying indoors, it does look like the “teenage wasteland” the band sings about in “Baba O’Riley.”

Here’s some other playlist highlights.

For celebrating the new social norms we have adopted: “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer, “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” by the Police, “Can’t Feel My Face” by the Weeknd.

For coping with isolation: “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen, Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself,” “One” by Harry Nilsson, “Isolation” by John Lennon, “Me Party” performed by Amy Adams and Miss Piggy from “The Muppets.”

For when you feel under the weather:  Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” “Fever,” by Little Willie John, “The Fever” by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

For parents and students: Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” and Creedence Clearwater Rival’s “Looking Out My Back Door,” which offers several suggestions for staying entertained.

For those who feel like the world, as you know it, is ending: “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” by R.E.M. and “Waiting for the End of the World” by Elvis Costello.

For facing the situation with grit and determination: “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”

For lifting spirits: Jackson Browne’s “Before the Deluge” and from the “The Sound of Music” as performed by Julie Andrews, “My Favorite Things.”
