This group of Veterans’ picture was taken on Saturday, July 10 during Troy Days by David Purtee. The Quilt of Valor presentation was at the Military Service Memorial for seven of Troy, Idaho’s Veterans and was hosted by the Troy Historical Society. Pictured are: L-R - Tonya (Trout) Whiting, Joe Johnson, Billy Ray Reeves, Larry Calene, Danny Roberts, Philip ‘Bear’ Schultz, and Mike Strom. Due to the heavy smoke from the regional wildfires, we have been having some truly amazing sunrises! I set out on the morning of August 25th, at about 7:00am, to capture the sunrise under a 500mm lens, and ended up getting more than I bargained for! With the heavy smoke acting as a primitive solar filter, I was able to capture these two sunspots in the photosphere of the sun! Sunspots are visible magnetic fluxuations on the suns' surface, causing a relative decrease in temperature and light. Often appearing as two separate spots, one spot is typically positively-charged, while the other has a negative magnetic charge. Only the largest sunspots can be seen from Earth without the use of a telescope, and what makes this photo even better is that sunspots aren't permanent, and can last only a few days. While it's never a smart idea to look or point your camera at the sun without protection, the smoke and a bit of luck on timing worked together to provide me with this awesome capture!

After a two year hiatus, the Border Highlanders Pipes & Drums perform for an attentive audience on January 28 at their annual Burns Supper, a festive celebration of the life and poetry of Robert Burns, held in Moscow's 1912 Center. In existence since 1974, the band is comprised of musicians from throughout the Palouse region, under the direction of Pipe Major Ben Hunter.

Taken on Oct. 3, 2021 after a dusty dove left an imprint of its visit on our picture window. The dove was fine and flew away. We were so glad to welcome the rain in the past week but haven't washed the ghostly print on our glass. Taken East of Moscow on Wallen Road by Karen Purtee.
It was hummingbird reunion day at our house east of Moscow. Several species all coming for dinner at the same time on Thursday, May 19th. We have other feeders, but the front window was the feeder of choice for three pairs of three different species. Then the reflection off of the glass makes the photo appear to have 12 birds buzzing about. The copper colored Rufus is at 9 o'clock; the Black-chinned at 3 o'clock; and, the Broad-tailed at 6 o'clock. All the females are green. (The Calliope pairs use other feeders.)
Taken November 10, 2021 by David Purtee. The bare limbs of an Aspen tree in our front yard seemed to have leaves reappear when a flock of finches landed to rest. It is cool now so they are fluffed up and enjoying the morning sun. Taken East of Moscow near Wallen Road.
