Champagne Sunday started off as a five-person band in Southern California. Today it numbers two, the married couple Jessi and Jared Fredeen, who moved to Tacoma to be part of the Pacific Northwest music scene.
The duo’s effervescent indie sound has been referred to as “Pearl Jam meets Bette Midler.” Before performing Saturday, June 9 at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn, Jessi Fredeen told Inland 360 a bit more about the band.
What instruments do you use to create your music?
Fredeen: We compose our songs on guitars, ukulele and sometimes piano. In our shoes, we utilize everything from percussion to trombone, looping pedals and harmonizers.
Are there any musicians that have inspired you and your style of music?
Fredeen: Champagne Sunday has lovingly been referred to as “Pearl Jam meets Bette Midler,” and our influences are of similar genre diversity. We tend to lock onto the honest and passionate artists, as well as acts that are entertaining to watch. For instance, Jared’s writing resembles John Prine or Kurt Cobain, while my strong theater background and love of Michael Jackson play heavily into my artistic choices.
How would you describe your style of music to someone who may not be familiar with it?
Fredeen: Fun, uplifting and honest. We weave stories about our love, family and life on the road with heavy harmonies, exciting guitar riffs and clever, heartfelt lyrics.
