Image: On the LCSC Hells Canyon Geology Field trip this spring jetboat passengers noticed this showy pink flower on the steep slopes near Limekiln Point. "Wild Begonia" is related to Knotweed, Sour dock and Sorrel. Photo by Sarah Walker, May 5, Hells Canyon near Limekiln Point.

Wild Begonia in Hells Canyon!

Image: On the LCSC Geology Trip to Hells Canyon this spring, we saw this huge plant with spikes of purple flowers growing right in its own vase, an historic lime kiln. Thick-leaved thelypody is its long-winded name, and its flowers can be purple or white. Photo by Sarah Walker, May 5, Hells Canyon near Limekiln Point.

Image: Every spring I search for blooming Bitterroots. This year I saw them during a rainstorm at Turnbull Refuge near Cheney, WA. My sister and niece were along with me and had never seen them so it was a good day! Photo by Sarah Walker, May 17, Turnbull Refuge near Cheney, WA.

Bitterroots in Bloom!

Image: I saw this dark goose among a flock of 15-20 white Snow geese at Genesee ponds on April 24. It looked brown to me but is called a "Blue" goose and is the same species as the white Snow goose. A few have been seen around the Palouse this winter but this color morph is unusual. Photo by Sarah Walker, at Genesee sewage ponds, April 24.

Earth Day Lit Up!

Image: A marsh wren at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge near Cheney. I hear their noisy chatter but hardly ever see them because they hide down low in the cattails -- but this one popped up to show off a little on a pleasant March afternoon. Sarah Walker, Turnbull Refuge, March 15

Perky and Bold

Image: The new Manning Crevice bridge over the Salmon River near Riggins has just one tall tower instead of the usual pair, a design used for only 6 other bridges in the world. We noticed people driving up the river road just to take a look. From this vantage it reminds me of a dog sled! Photo by Sarah Walker, along Salmon River road near Riggins, April 26.
