Tim Thornton, owner of White Salmon, Wash. outfitter River Drifters, paddles his SUP out into the White Salmon River.
More and more people are finding stand up paddleboarding is an outstanding way to enjoy local waters.

Nearly anyone can do it, it’s great exercise and you can’t get closer to the water without being in it.

Those looking for a challenge can tackle whitewater rivers. Those seeking solitude might ply a lake. You can try it by renting a board and paddle. Day rentals start at $17 to $30. Wear a life jacket and, if rocks are present, a helmet.
