Woodwork WHAT: Make an Adirondack Chair WHEN: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 28 (registration deadline, June 5) COST: $150
If you’re planning to sit and relax this summer, you might first want to learn how to build the classic summertime chair from Len Zeoli, who has been a professional woodworker for more than 35 years.
There are many forms of the Adirondack, but Zeoli chose one largely for comfort and altered the design for maximum enjoyment. Class participants will work in pairs to make one chair at a time, resulting in a western red cedar chair that can be painted or finished at home. Additional chairs and leg rests may be built for an additional cost.
The class is open to students 18 years and older; all tools and materials are provided. Due to the amount of time needed to prep materials, the registration deadline is Friday. Register at www.artisanbarn.org or by calling (509) 229-3414.
Safe sanitation WHAT: Green Cleaning WHEN: 7-9 p.m. July 16 COST: $10 Moscow resident/$12 non-resident
It’s not uncommon for the thought of housecleaning to make some people feel ill. But for some, housecleaning actually makes them ill. When Sandye Crooks found this to be true of her a few years ago, she discovered alternative techniques, which she shares at a July class in Moscow.
Using time-tested basic ingredients — baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide — Crooks demonstrates recipes and techniques for green, homemade cleaners.
“It’s so easy,” Crooks said. “It’s cheaper, it’s gentler on your skin and it’s better for children and animals.”
The popular, interactive class is valuable for both newbies to green cleaning as well as seasoned veterans, Crooks said. People often share from their own experience, so that everyone leaves with new information as well as a green cleaning kit of spray bottles and a natural room air freshener.

See the Woods Through Your Child’s Eyes — June 6 at St. Gertrude’s Monastery in Cottonwood. A guided walk through the woods near the monastery is an opportunity for children ages 5 to 12 and an accompanying adult to learn about wildflowers and look for wildlife in the forest. Learn to Cook Vegetarian Indian — Wednesday and June 10 at the Pullman Senior Center in Pullman. Learn how to make five easy Indian vegetarian dishes each week, including onion pakodas and sweet corn curry.
