Work by one of the world’s most admired political cartoonists, Herb Block, is on display at the Colfax Branch of the Whitman County Library.
The cartoonist went by “Herblock.” During his 72-year career, Block won three Pulitzer Prizes and shared a fourth with the Washington Post, where he started work in 1946. The U.S. Postal Service commissioned him to design the image for the stamp commemorating the 175th anniversary of the United States Bill of Rights.
Samples of Block’s environmental cartoons are on exhibit in “Ever Green” at the Colfax library. Many of the cartoons, which explore issues surrounding wildlife, wilderness and natural resources, were produced shortly before his death at the age of 91 in 2001 and remain relevant today.
The exhibit is on loan to the library from the Herblock Foundation, whose mission is to defend the basic freedoms guaranteed to all Americans.
