Trailer Talk: Who is swankier, Moses or Batman?

The latest in our unpredictable father-daughter cyber-chats about trailers for upcoming films ...

We start things off with the comedy sequel “Dumb and Dumber To.”

Caitlin Beesley: Well, I watched it.

Brian Beesley: OK. So what did you think?

CB: I admit, I laughed during the whole thing, but I never saw the first one and I doubt I’ll ever see the second.

BB: My first and only question is, why did they wait 20 years to make this masterpiece? Must see, because I can’t resist such sophomoric humor. Or should I say, “sophomoronic” humor?

CB: It’s definitely low brow, and both Carrey and Daniels have great chemistry, just from watching the trailer. Together, they could only form comedic gold.

BB: They definitely hit the mother lode with the first one.

Next ... “Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.”

BB: Well, we saw the first two (films), so it kind of figures you’d want to watch the third one to wrap things up. But my enthusiasm (which wasn’t great to begin with) waned with the second one, so maybe I’ll just wait until it comes out on DVD.

CB: I might throw in here that I was dragged, kicking and screaming, to see the first two. So my interest level has really flat-lined.

BB: Being an old adult — as opposed to a young adult — doesn’t help me.

CB: Trust me, there is no cut-off age for when you start recognizing bad plots, shoddy character development and even worse dialog. The books stink to high heaven.

BB: OK. You sold me. DVD or nothing.

CB: DVD and nothing

“Horrible Bosses 2”

CB: First off: must see.

BB: Why? Did you see the first one? I didn’t but after watching the trailers, I think I might want to revisit that decision.

CB: Really? I saw the first one. It was pretty good. I remember being somewhat disappointed, but c’mon, they added Chris Pine! Instant greatness factor. ... Actually, I take that back, that will definitely come back to haunt me.

BB: Not so fast: I watched all three trailers for this one on Hulu and I think I’d put in the must-see category. Looks too crazy funny to skip. ... The three principles — Bateman, Sudekis and Day — are all fun to watch.

CB: Yeah, that’s a complete knee-jerk reaction. Must see, but I may regret that later

And finally, “Exodus: Gods and Kings”

CB: Exodus cannot be better than “The Prince of Egypt” in this regard: There is no Val Kilmer singing. But, of course, the casting looks to be perfect, even though it’s controversial. And without basis.

BB: Here’s my take on "Exodus": (Director) Ridley Scott? Plus.

CB: Agreed.

BB: All-star cast? Plus.

CB: Agreed. Most definitely.

BB: A retelling of the biblical story of Moses? Big plus.

CB: Yep.

BB: But I still get this weird “Greatest Story Ever Told”-Hollywood vibe that throws up all sorts of yellow flags. What I mean is, I’m not a big fan of the Cecil B. DeMille School of epic filmmaking. For me, a must-see but with certain reservations.

CB: Well, didn’t they already do that with “The Ten Commandments”? This is really just the precursor, for anyone who didn’t study biblical history in college :P But not when it’s done a la Darren Aronofsky. “Noah” was a wash. Literally.

BB: Never saw “Noah.” All the leather scared me off.

CB: Well, all the chain mail might scare some Egyptologists off in this one, but hey, it’s an interpretation. It’s a must-see for me. I don’t think I have any reservations, actually.

BB: Right, must-see, but I’ll still have to try not to think “the Dark Knight” when I see Christian Bale up on the screen.

CB: What is Moses but the original Batman? Think about it.

BB: Moses as the original Batman? Hmmm. I think you nailed it.
