Orphan Black will suck you in with its story, but mostly for a gripping performance by Tatiana Maslany.
The Amazon Prime series tells the story of Sarah Manning (Maslany) a street hustler looking for an escape when she sees someone she recognizes: a woman who looks exactly like her.
The series follows Sarah and other clones (all played by Maslany) as they discover their past and work to save their future.
The story has numerous twists and turns throughout the seasons as Sarah and her sisters remove layer after layer of secrets. Just when you think you know whats coming, something completely unexpected turns up instead.
While the story itself is enough to carry the show, Maslany makes it worth watching. She is effortless in playing more than a dozen characters over the course of the series. While the characters have the same face, they all have distinct voices, quirks, personalities and motivations. As you watch the series it seems impossible that its all Maslanys work and you start forgetting they are all the same person. Its no wonder she received a much-deserved Emmy for her performance in 2016.
Not only is the acting perfectly portrayed, the writing shines. Characters are complex, which makes them relatable, and while the show can often be tense, there are moments of light-hearted humor. It isnt long before audiences begin to develop favorites.
If you are looking for a captivating drama to lose yourself in, Orphan Black should be on your list.
