The Marvel universe has lots of characters, and more pop up in every film. Some are easy to recognize, others not so much. There’s a few you know you know, but you just can’t remember.

So, to make things easier for this week’s opening of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” here is a character guide to help.

Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans)

Regular kid from Brooklyn turns into a superhero to fight Hydra, a group of Germans, in World War II. A man out of time trying to figure out his place in the

world, his signature shield comes in handy during a fight.

SEEN IN: “Captain America: First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World” (cameo), and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”

Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)

Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist seems to sum it up. Also, doesn’t play well with others. He’s the one in the metal suit. Or rather, suits.

SEEN IN: “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3.”

Thor (Chris Hemsworth)

Norse god of thunder hailing from Asgard but spends a lot of time saving Earth now that he’s learned a little humility. He wields the hammer Mjolnir that only he can lift, which he uses to beat bad guys, fly and hurl lightning.

SEEN IN: “Thor,” “The Avengers” and “Thor: The Dark World”

Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)

He’s the one you don’t want to make angry. Although his anger persona turns him into an indestructible and super-smashing monster, his human alter ego is reluctant to let the “other guy” out and prefers to sit quietly and do science things.

SEEN IN: “The Avengers,” “The Incredible Hulk” (played by Edward Norton) and “Hulk” (played by Eric Bana)

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson)

Trained as an assassin then worked for SHIELD. She’s tough and calculating but carries plenty of baggage from her not-so-nice days. Excellent interrogation skills and even without superpowers is worth having on your side.

SEEN IN: “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”

Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)

Don’t diss this guy. Can you fire an arrow looking in the exact opposite direction? Didn’t think so. He also has arrows that can blow up, work as a zip line or as a tracker. A

reformed criminal who now works with Earth’s mightiest heroes.

SEEN IN: “Thor” (cameo) and “The Avengers”

Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson)

Twin brother of Wanda, with super-speed. Even his brain works faster than us regular folks, which can lead to a little impatience.

She has superpowers like her twin brother. She has the ability to control probability. This causes her do things like deflect objects, stop projectiles and blow things up. That might be a bit vague, but just know it’s destructive.

SEEN IN: “Captain America: Winter Soldier” (cameo)

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)

The eye-patched director of SHIELD and the one responsible for the whole Avengers initiative. “Died” to protect himself from Hydra. You don’t want to mess with him.

Ultron (voiced by James Spader)

Created by Tony Stark (Hank Pym in the comics) he’s an artificial intelligence robot gone rogue. Super bad with all the abilities that come with being a robot, including rebuilding himself.

Ultron

It’s not exactly known how Vision’s story will pan out in this adaptation, but he is a force to be reckoned with. A synthetic humanoid, he can change his density and can shoot infrared and microwave radiation (this is comics, remember). So I guess you could say he’s incredibly powerful.

SEEN IN: First appearance as Vision. JARVIS in “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3”

characters that make billions of dollars and are loved worldwide. So when all the nerds in the audience freak out about a line some old guy said, that’s why.
