MOSCOW — The Moscow High School Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest will feature nine MHS students competing at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the MHS auditorium.
The event is free, and the students will be competing for the school title, which will send the winner to the March 7 state competition in Boise.
This is the eighth year MHS has competed in the event. It is sponsored by the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment of the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
The high school is at 402 E. Fifth St. and the auditorium is near the Third Street Indoors Commons entrance.
Feb. 13
PULLMAN — The fifth annual fundraiser to benefit the Palouse Discovery Science Center here will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the center, 950 N.E. Nelson Court.
“Wine Under the Stars; A Taste of Wine, A Taste of Science” will feature wine- and beer-tasting, food, jazz music, planetarium shows and a new traveling exhibit. The evening’s offerings include samples of science lessons and programs children experience during a field trip visit to the science center.
The science lessons and programs offered throughout the evening include exploring the nature of static electricity through a Van de Graff generator, discovering how nanotechnology can be used in commercial products and programming robots, according to a news release.
Planetarium shows will be featured throughout the night, with presentations during which guests can zoom in and out of different solar systems and historical eras. Members of the Palouse Astronomical Society will be on hand with telescopes, providing guided outdoor star gazing.
A new, 3,000-square-foot traveling exhibit, “Glow: Living Lights,” will be a main feature of the evening. Created by Exhibit IQ based in Las Vegas, it is designed to explore the science of bioluminescence.
The benefit is the science center’s primary fundraiser.

Feb. 13 and 15
PULLMAN — “Fantasia of Planets” is the latest program at the Washington State University Planetarium here, featured from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday and 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The program will feature live violin music while the planets are revealed and explored in all their variety, according to a news release. The event is at the planetarium, 231 Sloan Hall along Spokane Street.
Cost is $5 at the door and payment may be made by cash or check (no credit cards). Advance tickets are available at the Beasley Coliseum box office or through TicketsWest.com online or by phone at (800) 325-SEAT (a fee applies).
Feb. 14
KAMIAH — A Hometown Barn Dance here featuring live music by country and bluegrass band, Beargrass, begins at 5 p.m. Saturday with proceeds to benefit people undergoing cancer treatment.
Dinner, a chili and taco salad bar, will be served at 6 p.m. and music will start at 7 p.m. at the Kamiah American Legion Hall along Main Street.
The event features chili and pie contests, with entries (which must be submitted by 5 p.m.) costing $5 each. A silent auction also is planned. Admission is $15 per person and tickets will be sold at the door.
Proceeds from the evening will benefit the ICARE project, which provides financial support to people in small Clearwater River communities who are actively undergoing treatment for cancer.
Feb. 16-18
LEWISTON — Pre-auditions for the Lewiston Civic Theatre production of “Evita” will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at the theater, 805 Sixth Ave.
Fred Scheibe, director, and Sharon Warner, musical director, both of Lewiston, will go over the music principals and the ensemble will need for auditions during the pre-auditions. They will also discuss character traits.
The audition schedule for the production is: 7 p.m. next Thursday — vocal auditions 7 p.m. Feb. 20 — vocal auditions 2 p.m. Feb. 21 — children’s chorus Callbacks and casting will be Feb. 22.
The cast will include five main adult parts as well as children, chorus and dancers.
