In Broadways dazzling Cabaret, the avant-garde lives of theater misfits are thrown into sharp relief against the political and social unrest reshaping Germany in the early 1930s.
Regional Theatre of the Palouse opens the 1998 version of the show tonight in Pullman. It features Mathias Oliver as American novelist Clifford Bradshaw, who comes to Berlin looking for inspiration. He stumbles upon the Kit Kat Klub and meets a spirited English performer, Miss Sally Bowles (Anjuli Dodhia). Wild and free, Sally revels in the life of the cabaret, a refuge from the worries of pre-World War II.
Other characters include the Master of Ceremonies (Jasper Barbosa), boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider (Elena Panchenko), and a Jewish fruit vendor, Herr Schultz ( Mike McCully). Against the backdrop of real historical events, the characters sense the growing nationalist fervor, and their dream-like world starts to change forever.
Produced by executive director John Rich, the show is directed by Michael Todd, with Kimberly McDowell as music director and choreography by Berit Preece.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 1:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. There is an additional show at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20. The show runs today through Feb. 24.
