Art Under the Elms, the signature event of the Dogwood Festival, is in its 33rd year and features more than 100 artists, along with entertainers and family-friendly activities. The event will take place Friday through Sunday.
Every year a wide variety of crafted items are featured by regional artists. Here are a handful of artisans to look for this weekend, using information provided to event coordinators:

Craft and Lore is an independent design and build workshop, focusing on leather goods that are simple in form and function. It started with an old German hunting knife that founder Chad Von Lind wanted to build a custom-fitted leather sheath for. It was his first piece, and he built it with an old set of tools received from a gentleman who used to make belts back in the 1970s. “He had spent more than 10 years in the web and graphic design industry, but it lacked soul for him. He needed something tangible. Something that was real, and not just pixels on a screen. And leather was it.”

From the mountains of northern Idaho, saw steel is recycled from the local wood mills and reborn. Knife blades are forged, shaped, reground and heat treated. The handles are fitted and a custom leather sheath is made.
“We strive to make the jewelry that you don’t have to think about; pieces that are timeless, always fit, and will stay with you.” Items are made with semi-precious stones, sterling silver and 14k gold-filled. “Everything is made from scratch, soldered and hand-forged.”

Designer Jackie Priess wanted to make a hat for her two daughters. Using a sweater that was on its way to the thrift store, she created the first hat “and all her daughter's friends raved about them.” That’s when JAX hats business was born. Starting out at local markets and home parties, JAX is now becoming an international brand with recycled hats for women, men, children and babies. “JAX mission is to save the world from ugly sweaters one hat at a time.”

Besides the Artisan Green, Art Under the Elms offers free tea fairy tea parties on Saturday and Sunday in the Tea Fairy Tent. Families can also enjoy a free bouncy castle and obstacle course at the Family Fun Fair, along with games and activities. Music and art demonstrations will be taking place in the Center of the Green.
For those who want to get creative, the Kids’ Interactive Art Tent provides art-centered activities for children and families and a Painting Party with local artist Vicki Gertje is available for adults at 3 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday for $5.
Community Row features an opportunity to learn about nonprofit organizations in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley and is where to participate in the fifth annual Art of Giving Food Drive. Musicians will play on the Student Union Building amphitheater stage and the food court offers flavors from around the world, both of which have free admission.
Other Dogwood Festival Events:
40th annual Seaport River Run: The race begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Swallows Park in Clarkston. Line formation begins at 9:40 a.m. Walkers and runners can choose between 2.9 miles or 6.2 miles along the Snake River. The cost is $20 with a T-shirt or $15 without a T-shirt. Register at the Lewiston Parks and Recreation Office at 1424 Main St., Lewiston. Registration will be taken up to 9:45 a.m. on race day, though late registrations that pay for a shirt are not guaranteed one for race day, but will receive it at a later date.
Dogwood Show & Shine: Classic cars, trucks and motorcycles are on display from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the LCSC campus in Lewiston. Admission is free.
32nd annual Festival of Quilts: The Seaport Quilter’s Guild is holding the “Galaxy of Quilts” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Clarkston High School in Clarkston. The event includes exhibits, demonstrations and a merchant mall. Admission is $4.
