Between Clarkston and Dayton on U.S. Highway 12 is the little town of Pomeroy. Grain silos out number restaurants in the town of 1,395, so when two new venues opened this spring there was likely some excitement.
The Pomeroy Brew Pub and Madres Mexican Restaurant and Cantina face each other on opposite sides of Main Street. The time of day, noon, decided the matter of which to choose because the brew pub doesn’t open until 4 p.m. most days.
Madre’s serves standard Mexican-American fare — burritos, enchiladas and chimichangas with generous heaps of guacamole and sour cream. It’s owned by Ann Stevenson who moved to the area from Shepherd, Texas. Her sons help cook in the kitchen on cast iron pans and wait on customers. It’s a family-friendly venue with a wishing fountain in the back, along with a cantina, stage and dance floor.
Of course nachos are among the appetizers ($6.49 small/$8.49 large). The platter comes piled high with chips, cheese, refried beans, jalapenos, sour cream and sides of creamy chile con queso and salsa. Main Street Tacos ($7.99 for lunch) is a popular order: three soft white corn tacos prepared with spicy and tender carne asada, onions and cilantro, served with rice and beans. El Burrito Grande ($11.95) is the restaurant’s largest burrito, arriving with beef or chicken and lettuce, tomatoes and jalapenos. It’s accompanied by refried beans or bean soup, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo. The Fajita plate entree made with marinated steak, chicken, or both, is prepared for one ($12.99) or two ($22.49).
