The open house Saturday at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is part fun, part education and part reminder to the community of its resources.

The annual event regularly draws a number of families and individuals who come out for the information and activities provided at booths with various veterinary clubs. In addition to face painting, crafts, games and educational opportunities, the event also features hospital tours and demonstrations.

Other event highlights include the teddy bear surgery clinic, where kids have an opportunity to gown up and do a practice “surgery” on a stuffed animal they bring. Live animals will have their insides painted on their outside and dog owners are invited to drop off their animals for a $10 wash and groom, an annual fundraiser for local shelters. The Canine Club is holding a 5K fun run — dogs encouraged, but not required — at 8 a.m., prior to the event.

“It’s basically an opportunity to demystify the vet school,” said Adena Sabins, a veterinary student who is helping to coordinate the event. “A lot of people have never set foot in the hospital. It’s also a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a vet student.”

She explained that many area pet owners aren’t aware of the variety of services the teaching school offers, such as rehabilitation services that can help pets gain mobility after accidents or surgeries.

The event is scheduled during WSU Mom’s Weekend, which means there’s plenty going on around campus, including art events, shopping opportunities, concerts and recreational events.
